While main living spaces need quiet versatility, a powder room invites bold decisions. You can experiment freely with exciting colour, texture, and pattern. It is truly a closed door where you can create a dramatic, immersive universe for your guests.
Therefore, when our team took on the Great Gatsby project, we set out to execute a daring guest bathroom transformation. We wanted to turn a cold, generic bathroom into a moody, boutique-hotel-inspired retreat. Here is how we turned a forgettable space into the most talked-about room in the home.
The Challenge: Tackling a Builder-Grade Guest Bathroom Transformation
The original bathroom suffered from what we call “builder-grade fatigue.” It was fairly functional, but completely devoid of personality or visual weight. Consequently, it felt generic, stark, uninspiring, and forgettable.
Rather than just swapping out a sink and painting the walls greige, however, we completely reimagined the space. We used dramatic colour blocking, custom stonework, and rich materials.
Ultimately, our goal was to create an inviting atmosphere rather than a simple face-lift.
The Palette: Moody, Atmospheric & Unapologetically Bold
To build a space that feels like a boutique hotel, we leaned heavily into deep, atmospheric tones:
The Backdrop: We painted the walls an ultra-dark green that reads almost black. As a result, this deep envelope creates an intimate setting while making every architectural feature pop.
Seamless Geometric Tile: Specifically, we selected a striking geometric green mosaic tile. We ran it continuously from the bathroom floor into the shower and up the feature wall. This uninterrupted line visually expands the floor plan.
Glossy Olive Accents: On the remaining shower walls, glossy olive green subway tiles add subtle variation. Furthermore, they reflect ambient light and keep the dark palette balanced.
The Standout Details: Monolithic Stone & Warm Brass
A dramatic palette requires exceptional craftsmanship. For this reason, we curated every single finish to create a tactile experience:
The Monolithic Granite Vanity: Designed as the star of the room, this custom dark green granite vanity wraps across the countertop, down the sides, and up the backsplash. Consequently, it looks less like cabinetry and more like a sculpted piece of architecture.
The Arched Focal Point: A custom, frameless arched mirror hangs above the vanity. It softens the strong geometric lines of the tile while drawing the eye upward.
Warm French Brass: To balance the cool, dark tones, we introduced warm French brass plumbing fixtures from luxury brands. (Fun fact: our client patiently waited over a year for this specific brass faucet due to supply chain delays, and it was worth every day!).
Sculptural Lighting: Instead of standard overhead vanity lights, we suspended sculptural glass pendant lights. They cast a soft, ambient glow and double as functional art.
Open Sightlines: In addition, a frameless glass shower enclosure ensures sightlines remain unobstructed, keeping the focus entirely on the feature mosaic tile behind it.
Why Taking a Big Design Risk Was Worth It
During the initial concept phase, the client was genuinely nervous. The geometric floor tile and dark walls felt like a huge leap outside her comfort zone. However, she trusted our design process and took the leap anyway.
Now, it’s her absolute favorite room in the entire house!
Ultimately, this guest bathroom transformation proves that taking a bold design risk delivers the biggest payoff. It’s sophisticated, unexpected, and utterly unforgettable.
